The longest dog sled race in the world, “Arctic Barents Race” is under planning. The first race will take place in March 2010. It will start in Røros, Norway and end up after 23 days in Murmansk, 2800 kilometers away. A pilot race will be arranged this winter.
Seven long-distance mushers from Norway, Finland, France, Canada, USA and Russia are taking part in the three “pilot races” in March-April: The 420 km long Amundsen Race, the 300 km long Pasvik Trail and the 500 km long Arctic Barents Pilot from Kirkenes to Murmansk, web site Femundlopet.no writes.
The first complete “Arctic Barents Race” that according to specialists will “make Iditarod look like a warming up race”, starts in Røros, Norway March 9th 2010. The track will go through Sweden and Northern Finland to Kirkenes and end up in Murmansk, Russia. The total distance is 2800 km. 20 of the world’s best long-distance mushers will be invited to race.
According to the race’s web site, the winner of “Arctic Barents Race” will receive 100.000 EUR.
